Block 24 (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

3.5 starsThis is not an easy book to read. There are 2 stories being told in this novel. The first is Adina's story. It takes place in Auschwitz. Although I have read about Auschwitz before, I was not aware there were brothels there. Adina's story is very difficult to read. It was just gut-wrenching.Natalie's story was also hard to read but for different reasons. Natalie was not likable and I found myself having a hard time rooting for her. This novel is unique in that both stories parallel each other, but with one big difference. Adina's story was involuntary. She had no choice in what happened to her at the concentration camp. Natalie's story was all about choice. She made bad choices and had to deal with the consequences. I'll be honest here: I kept waiting to find out why she was the way she was. I expected there to be a big reveal as to something that caused her to be so awful. I thought about this book for a while after I finished it. It took me some time to fully absorb it and make all of the connections. I liked that. Had I connected with the characters more, this could have easily been a 4-5 star book. Okay, so I had no idea what I was getting into with this book ... I had no idea I was headed for a trip back to the Holocaust. The book was well written but it was dark, raw, and sad. The ending was a weird happy-but-not-happy ending. Do I regret reading it? No. Like I said, it's well written and the author pulls you in making it hard to put down. I'm sure I'll be reading more from Evan Tyler in the future.

3.5 stars. Written well enough, but couldn't really connect to the characters.
