Blood Howl (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

I have read better but was set to give this four, then when the “voice” changed it slipped to a three VERY fast. I know it was written by two different people and in my thoughts, one author wrote the first half and the other wrote the second. But the two authors writing styles are so different that it completely changed the book for me. It completely changed the CHARACTERS for me. Suddenly the clichés were exactly that, clichés. In the first part of the book Jed’s yakking and spewing out of the metaphors was different somehow, harsher and more original and even though sometimes over the top, his speech and thoughts were still fun. In the second half of the book Jed became just plain boring. So disappointing. The second thing that got to me was I kept waiting to see what it was about this Fil character that forced him to hire Jed in the first place. It had to be something pretty big. Because a guy who has the power this Fil had, able to have a shootout in the middle of the street, pour man power in to clean up the bodies and blood, certainly should have no problem walking into a dilapidated old house and pulling out a man/child that Redford was when we first meet him. I mean Fil had the police department in his back pocket, had all these loyal followers who had no trouble later snatching Red… twice. So why bring in this third party? Then the ONLY explanation was a MISTAKE? Fil made a mistake??? Nope. Doesn’t fly. Or howl or whatever. So then what did they need from Red? Why put forth all this effort to get him? Simply because he was a wolf? Fil can’t have wolves running around that weren’t in his pack? Again. SOOOOO not cutting it. Why not just kill him? At least the second time around, KILL HIM! No, they kidnap him again, losing men to do it, like Red is important, but he’s not, he’s just another wolf. Then the head guy, the thousands of years old Fil himself administers the blood to change him? Why? Why in the world was it so important to have Red? Again, so not making it.Plus Jed to me was a little unbelievable. Was this story a challenge to create a big strong ‘devil doesn’t care’ character and make him crave being a bottom, crave having someone shove him around? Really threw me several times. I had no real problem thinking Red COULD top although his personality didn’t really lend to that but throw in his wolf and wa-la! Oh well. I will give this a three star. I did enjoy the first half. The second half threw me out quite a bit along with the plot problems I saw. What can I say about this one. Jake and Red were certainly a cute couple. Jed's tendencies in finding his sex partners bothered me a bit. Somehow his preferences didn't fit all his badass attitude and armory in the closet. It was probably supposed to be like that, but still.I really liked David and his love-hate banter with Jake. It was also nice that his real nature was not exposed. Leaves room for immagination. I'm looking forward to reading a sequel about David.

Plot holes aside, it was a very enjoyable blend of Die Hard style action and sweet love story.

The plot needs a lot of work but I did like the main characters.
