So I don't love this like others did. Rick, for me, ruined what could have been an amazing story. I was really enjoying it in the beginning, and then that scene happened and I was just sick! But other than that (which was a big thing really) it was a great read. For me, Isaac, was really an amazing character and I actually fell in love with him. He was by far a better and more likable character for me. His disability didn't bother me and a better, stronger relationship would have been better. But for me, this was more like a man caring for a friend than an actual relationship. As for Rick... I really could not like him in the end. He reminds me of the kind of guys I feel like saying that they should just let the other person go. It just doesn't seem fair to me, especially when it hurts the other person so much. I just don't like that sort of thing in stories, so most people probably won't have that issue.Honestly, even though I really disliked Rick, this story was better than I expected. While the romance wasn't what I would have liked, Isaac and the writing were just two things that brought the story up for me. The author is definitely amazing at what she does. And I am glad I gave this one a ago. This is a beautiful protrayal of a character on the autism spectrum. It gently shows his thoughts and his sexual attraction to his childhood friend Rick. Isaac is working things out and isn't as fast as others but he's still intelligent and has his own smarts, easily mistaken for being childlike but that would be inaccurate. It's a difficult relationship to show while keeping the romance constant and I think it's very well done. Isaac feels accurate, he comes across as an adult with adult needs. Rick is a strong, capable world-traveller but I never once doubted the love he had for his friend or saw any reason to question it until the Doctor illustrated an outsiders view. This is part of the stories power, it shows the strength of understanding between these two and how Isaac has a strength that Rick needs. Isaac is different but no less desirable for it.Importantly there's a sense of realism here (I'm not suprised to read in the authors notes that she's worked with autistic/asperger children) it's a long way from the typical socially awkward professor trope that's common. The story is deeply touching without ever feeling like it's making a point. I felt that they'd have issues being open as a couple but that there was enough love between them to convince anyone that mattered and to get them through it. I highly recommend it.
What do You think about Bodies In Space (2012)?
Both of the boys did a lot of growing up in this lovely story.
