Boot and Shoe are two puppy siblings who love each other very much. They eat together, pee together, and sleep together. In fact, the only difference between them is that one of them prefers sitting on the front porch while the other prefers sitting on the back porch. One day, a squirrel stirs up some trouble and leaves both puppies very disoriented. Will they ever regain a sense of normalcy? This friendship story is ideal for children in early elementary school. It’s a bittersweet romp with an uplifting ending. The pictures are simple, but they add wonderful character to the book. Litter-mates Boot and Shoe do everything together - sleep, pee, and eat. The only thing different is that Boot prefers to spend the day on the back porch and Shoe prefers to spend his day on the front porch. All is fine until a pesky squirrel mixes things up and the dogs on the wrong porches. They each decide to wait for the other and so they are both stuck until they both have to pee and find each other. This is a very cute story about brothers, friendship, and love. The illustrations are "rendered in black Prismacolor pencil and gouache on Speckletone Madero Beach 701b text weight paper." The colors and drawings give a comic feel, but are softer and less blocky than comic book would be. Both dogs eyes are covered with fur, but the reader is still able to get a clear understanding of how the dog is feeling from the illustrations. My favorite page is where the dogs are chasing the squirrel all over the yard because it truly captures the chaos of such an event.
