I hate giving bad reviews especially when I know how much work and courage it takes to publish a book, let alone a series as this author has done. With that said I have to be honest and say I couldn't finish this book. I made it half way and even that was a struggle. The main reason why I couldn't finish is because I was so lost. Half way through the book and I still didn't know exactly what Aern was as apparently he's not human. I did learn that he can control humans but apparently not Emily. His brother is evil. There's no background to how their species came about and what they are. No real explanation as to what the council or the division are, yet they are both mentioned quite often. There's a prophecy that we know nothing about yet the book is created around it - At least the first half of the book doesn't explain it. Morgan (Aern's evil brother) is able to keep tracking them down when they're constantly on the run but doesn't explain how he's able to do that, and do so quickly. Because there were so many unanswered questions and not in a good way this story couldn't keep my attention. I was bored. At one point at the beginning of the book I thought I may have accidentally bought a sequel and not the first in the series. That's how much the readers are thrown into the deep end.Maybe if the author had chosen to give the background on Aern's ancestors and what exactly he is and explained the council etc then maybe I could've taken the story in and become interested. The start of this book confused me, so much so that I actually went back to Amazon to see if it was indeed book 1. It was but it is book 1 of a series that follows on from a previous series. There was no mention of this anywhere and it was only by muddling through that it became clear. This took something away from my enjoyment of the book, hence the 3 stars. The story itself was well written with some humorous moments. There are twists and turns aplenty, some of which you can see happening and others which will come from the sidelines when you're not expecting it.I enjoyed this book whilst I was reading it, once I got past my confusion. However once I closed the book, that was that. Not enough for me to get either the previous books in the first series or get the continuing books in the second series. If you have all four books of The Frey Saga then I would give this one a go - you have the back story so will probably enjoy it more than I did.
