Boyfriend App (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

I read a lot of YA so I like to think I'm "hip" to the times, but I can't fathom how anyone would like this. Maybe teenagers would really love this. I don't know. Basically this girl creates an "app" to help people like each other and there's a big conspiracy going on with the phone company that's supposed to make you go "OMG" at the end, but really just leaves you rolling your eyes. I had no real idea about what this book was going to be about and I hadn't read any reviews either. I just went in open minded and ready to enjoy a good book, I hoped. And I was very happy with how the book turned out. Even now I think it's a bit of a weird book, but I happen to like weird and this was so fun that it's hard to not enjoy it. I got sucked in quickly and found myself drawn into the drama which often times can be annoying but this time it felt different. I feel like it was probably the writing style that made you like Audrey so much as well as her group of "Trogs" as they've been nicknamed. The characters were really wonderful I thought. Audrey, her group of friends, and her cousin were all funny, unique, and surprising. The mean girls thoroughly mean and the Public company genius. The author created a great world that was nearly ours except for the Public which is a huge electronics company from what I understand. From cheesy slogans and advertising to using mega stars to promote their products. Unfortunately there is a more sinister side to the company...which really surprised me and added a lot of excitement to the story. The story is well-rounded and I really like how Katie Sise Incorporated how much the internet and social media is used by teens. Audrey cousin runs a very successful fashion blog and is a big part in helping Audrey with promoting the Boyfriend App. Not to mention how there are surely programming contests and stuff like what happened in the book. Maybe just on a smaller scale. It also shows a lot of how apps are made and the programming side of things which has made me want to create and app and cringe at how hard it sounds at the same time.I really did enjoy this book, my only complaints would be that the Boyfriend App 2.0 seemed a bit devious for Audrey's character. And possibly a bit unscientific but when you think about the back story and what she went through getting there it does make sense. And also she didn't seem completely set on which guy she liked until a good ways into the book. For a good part of the front half I wasn't sure who she liked and I felt like it could have been made a bit clearer. Overall, I really loved this book. It was funny, it was incredibly unique and the characters were just enjoyable. I felt like at the beginning the romance was confusing, as I couldn't tell which guy Audrey liked, but that aside I felt like I learned something from this book as well as sitting down and enjoying a book on a lazy afternoon. I would definitely read another book from this author. (the sequel comes out next April ;) I can't wait!)
