Bruce (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

I always liked Bruce Springsteen, especially his earlier stuff. He is an amazing song writer with a huge catalog of original tunes. This author takes many of his songs to a philosophical level beyond my perception. He also is a huge fan of Bruce and elevates him to a level of slightly less than worship. However, if you want to know everything conceivable about Mr. Springsteen, this would be a book to be interested in. I labored with its'analytically plodding style. It took me way to long to read because of this. It just bored me to tears. I rejoiced when I finally arrived at the end. Peter Ames Carlin gives a candid look into the artist through family history, struggles with the music business, and Springsteen's character. Blue collar roots and integrity-driven beliefs set him apart in a business that swallows many. What is also apparent, and a pleasant surprise, is he wasn't swept up into drug and alcohol addiction. The music mattered far too much. His struggles as an artist also showcase that some of the best creation comes from difficult times. Although you cannot come away from a biography knowing someone personally or privately, Carlin effectively conveyed the kind of man and artist Springsteen is. Excellent biography all around in my opinion.
