I wanted to like this, because bugs are really cool. And I've been trying to foster an appreciation for bugs in my daughter. So, I was disappointed that the book described bugs as yuck, scary, gross, and ewww in places. I get it that those are attributes that some people ascribe to bugs--but I don't see why we should be encouraging such associations in children. Why not inspire curiosity instead--maybe it will lead to a lifelong love of science. The illustrations were colorful and kind of fun--except too many of the bugs looked malicious. And the rhyming text was a bit insipid. What? This fictional book illustrates that bugs are all around us and they come in all different sizes, colors, and shapes. Some bugs are cute, smelly, scary, friendly, or snugly. So What? Children will enjoy the colorful illustrations and the shapes and different characteristics each insect possess. Now What? Students will enjoy viewing the illustrations and colors of the bugs during free reading time.
