My new author obsession. Thoroughly enjoyed this book, and already got the next 2 from the library. In an attempt to be objective, I will mention that the villains seem overly villainous- rather obvious- but it works. There are some undercurrents of mystery that are not predictable, and that keeps it interesting. Good twists to the story. It's a thick book for young kids, but I would let mine read it if they wanted. The best "new to me" author I've found this year! I've loved reading Christian fantasy all my life, but really began seeking it out in high school. I had heard about Jill Williamson's books for a couple of years now but never read them until now. What took me so long? I'm ashamed to say the fact that it was published by a smaller company (Marcher Lord Press) that made me shy away from purchasing it myself. Needless to say, my fears of lack of quality from a smaller press was unfounded, as this is the best Christian fantasy novel I have enjoyed since Donita K. Paul's "DragonKeeper Chronicles" series ended. Despite being a loyal DragonKeeper fan for years ... dare I say, it's perhaps even better? I appreciate how much more mature the storyline and content are than most Christian fantasy --this was clearly written for teenagers and young adults my age which something I've felt has been lacking in the Christian/Inspirational market for awhile. I bought the rest of the trilogy almost immediately after finishing "By Darkness Hid" (despite the price) and am sure to enjoy the rest ... Bravo, Mrs. Williamson! Full review to come soon ...
What do You think about By Darkness Hid (2009)?
I loathe this insipid and uninspired rehash of every cliche medival fantasy coming of age vomit.
