"Machos und Macheten" ist ein sehr amüsantes Portrait über zwei Männer die auf den ersten Blick sehr unterschiedlich sind aber sich bei genauerem hinsehen so perfekt ergänzen wie die sprichwörtliche Faust aufs Auge. Im Mittelpunkt des Romans stehen zwei Anti-Helden die sich nicht im geringsten um gesellschaftliche Konventionen kümmern sondern ihr Leben so Leben wie es gerade auf der Fussmatte vor der heimischen Haustür steht, klingelt und um Einlass bittet. Sie haben weder Ziele noch Pläne sondern besitzen ein unerschütterliches Selbstverständnis und vertrauen darauf, dass auch morgen die Sonne aufgeht und es mit dem Leben schon auf irgend eine Art und Weise weitergeht.Schon in der Anfangsszene ist vieles enthalten was das Leben der exzentrischen Hauptfiguren Hap und Leonard so speziell macht. Als Wachmänner auf einer Geflügelfarm helfen sie, oder vielmehr ist es Hap, spät Nachts einem jungen Mädchen das von einem gewalttätigen Peiniger der auf Drogen und Aufputschmittel ist und schlimm verprügelt wird. Ihr Vater, der Besitzer der Geflügelfarm, zeigt sich dankbar und bietet Hap Hunderttausend Dollar Belohnung und einen einen Monat Ferien an ... Hap lehnt das Geld erst ab, für eine selbstverständliche Tat will er nicht annehmen aber er entschliesst sich auf zureden die Dankbarkeit des reichen Unternehmers anzunehmen. Was bietet sich mehr an als das Leben auf einer Kreuzfahrt nach Mexiko zu geniessen? Wie es nicht anderes zu erwarten war buchen sie die Reise auf einem ausgedienten Seelenverkäufer der nur bedingt seetüchtig ist und stranden im vermeintlichen mexikanischen Paradies ... und sogleich verstricken sich die beiden gutmütigen Haudegen im nächsten harschen Abenteuer.Der Golkonda Verlag legt die Serie um die beiden rustikalen Tausendsassas Hap Collins, seines Zeichens weiss, hetero, Kriegsdienstverweigerer und Leonard Pine, schwarz, schwul, Vietnamvertan nach und nach neu auf. "Wilder Winter" ist der erste Band und dieser hier, obwohl er früher erschienen ist, ist der sechste Teil. Lesen kann man die Bücher wild durcheinander aber ich empfehle mindestens mit "Wilder Winter" zu beginnen. In diesem Buch werden kleine Anspielungen auf Vorfälle gemacht die in einem noch nicht auf deutsch veröffentlichten Roman geschehen sind. Dies ist etwas schade aber nicht weiter tragisch. Ich möchte noch auf die qualitativ hochwertige Aufmachung und die schöne Gestaltung aufmerksam machen und nach der Lektüre kann ich auch den Sinn des Umschlagbildes verstehen.Es ist ganz sicher nicht die literarische Qualität die dieses Buch lesenswert machen sondern die Figuren die mit Witz und Sarkasmus die Geschichte vorwärts tragen. Aus der chaotischen Handlung stechen die Protagonisten heraus, unterhalten und amüsieren die Leserschaft und ich glaube, die meisten Leser/-innen sind froh das man selbst nicht so ein turbulentes Leben führt wie Hap und Leonard und man nach dem letzten gelesenen Wort das Buch zuklappen und sich im wohligen Lesesessel die schrägen Geschichten nochmals kurz gedanklich Revue passieren lassen kann. Ich freu mich, dass schon bald einen weiterer Band von Hap und Leonard im Golkonda Verlag auf Deutsch veröffentlicht wird. Von den pointiert erzählten Abenteuern der beiden texanischen Originale kann ich nämlich nie genug bekommen. Wie sagt Hap so schön ganz zum Schluss: "Manchmal machen wir aus Versehen was richtig, stimmts?" Jop ... stimmt genau!
The sixth book in the "Hap and Leonard" series is the first one where I felt the darkness overcame the mirth and silliness. While bad things happened in the prior entry, RUMBLE TUMBLE, there was a good deal of comic mayhem to balance out the mood. There's much less hilarity in CAPTAINS OUTRAGEOUS, and the bad things are really bad, and not for the squeamish. (Lansdale's detailed descriptions of the rough treatment of several of the female characters even gave me pause--I won't use the word "misogynistic," but others might.) The cadence of this book was markedly different than the others in the series, with a very clear action-pause-action-pause-action rhythm, as if the story and protagonists needed to stop and catch their breath. Our beloved odd couple seem to be getting more weary of the violence and misadventure as they get older and as their stable romantic relationships become more important to them. Lansdale didn't return to this series for almost a decade after this novel--he may also have been weary--and since the story brings together almost all of the (surviving) characters from earlier in the series (and then kills one of them off), it could have served as a finale. I enjoyed this one--you can't go wrong with a Hap and Leonard novel, and our pair of misadventurers have come to have real psychological weight as characters--but I finished it a bit depressed and feeling as weary as the characters themselves.
What do You think about Captains Outrageous (2003)?
Hap is leaving his job as security guard at the chicken processing plant when he hears a weak call for help. He ends up rescuing a young girl being raped and savagely beaten by a drugged out freak. The young woman happens to be the daughter of the owner of the plant and he's so grateful, he pushes $100,000 on Hap and insists he use it for a vacation. Reluctant at first, he finally agrees and Leonard and he take a cruise. When they run into a snooty waiter on the ship, Leonard is his usual charming self, which gets them left behind at a Mexican stop when the man gives them the wrong departure time. With only a few hundred dollars between them and the clothes on their backs, they don't take it well when three goons, actually, they learn, off-duty cops, try to mug them. While fighting back, Leonard is stabbed and the fight isn't going well until an old Mexican with a machete jumps in. The old man, a fisherman, and his beautiful daughter take them home and begin nursing Leonard back to health.Then things start to get dangerous.Throw in a lot of corrupt government officials, a nude Mexican mobster and his seven foot enforcer, a private eye from a previous adventure. Not to mention several murders, each more vicious than the last, and the two friends have a lot of scrambling to do on foreign soil to escape with their own lives.Then the trouble follows them home. More murders.

Featuring Hap & Leonard on another wild adventure, this time in Mexico. I love the dialogue, the characters, everything. These books are so much fun to read. I give a shit about these guys, I want them to be alright. They make me laugh, and when something happens to one of their friends, I want them to kick ass and take no prisoners. Which is pretty much what they always do. Highly recommend anything by Lansdale. If you see his name on the book, pick it up and read it! You will not be disappointed. I'm going to open up the next one on my list right now.....

At a glance, I saw that others who have read this book are growing tired of Lansdale's Hap and Leonard books. This is only the second one that I read and it was enough to have me get online the night I finished it and order several more Lansdale novels. Of course, The Bottoms novel and The Master's of Horror episode; Incident On and Off a Mountain Road were big influences in this decision as well.Hap and Leonard are a couple rough and tumble guys with unique personalities who seem to find trouble wherever they go. With a great supporting cast, excellent dialogue, dark humor, and interesting tiwsts, Captains Outrageous flowed nicely for me.This particular adventure starts with Hap saving a girl's life from a drugged-out attacker and the girl's father rewarfing him with a substancial amount of cash. It moves to Hap and Leonard being stranded in Mexico after taking what they thought would be a relaxing dream cruise and getting involved in numerous messes while south of the border.
