It still felt weird to be going into the place where he’d worked for his own physical therapy. It was weirder to be the one grumbling through the tedious exercises he needed to regain his upper body strength. He figured the experience would make him better at helping people, and he understood how lucky he was to be able to make a full recovery. It was chance that the bullet didn’t do more damage than it did, and it was Dane who had slowed the bleeding and kept the sepsis at bay. Thoughts of the SEAL wiped the burgeoning smile from his lips and slowed his steps as he headed for his car. If not for the report he had read on the incident, he could almost believe that Dane’s presence and life-saving heroism had been part of a feverish dream. But it had all been real, and that included his telling the man that he loved him. The memory made him cringe for a second as it always did before he reminded himself that if he hadn’t said it, he would have regretted the omission for the rest of his life.
