Colazione A Letto (2009) - Plot & Excerpts

Unable to relate or even care. Just because you are an indulgent bitch/slut with mental problems does not mean that you should be absolved of all wrongs, simply because you say you love your family and they, by default and relation, MUST love you too. It is one thing to consider forgiving a previously faithful and good husband for cheating on you after you have sexually/emotionally neglected him for years...it is another all together to forgive your SISTER, with whom you were formerly very close, for fucking your spouse. Not so much. I found the narrator's voice to be somewhat unique in that the character had a bit of a "trailer-trash" quality to it. She was pretty coarse and simple, but very honest. This is a book about the strength of family love, and its imperviousness to even the most unforgivable betrayals. It raises questions about how two children could experience the same tragedies, but be impacted so differently. And how much do one's bad experiences excuse us in the way we treat others? When Peachy walks in on her sister and husband having sex, she is forced to take a look at her life. She married her sister's ex-boyfriend, and has lived in her flamboyant, adventurous sister's shadow. Peachy loves her children fiercely (though taking care of them and dealing with one child's serious health issues is hard), and "thinks" she probably loves her husband, but marriage and motherhood at age 20 robbed her of any opportunity to live a life like her sister's. When her sister betrays her, she forces her sister to assume her position for a couple of days while she goes off to New York to step into her sister's shoes, and possibly to retaliate against her sister and husband by sleeping with someone she loves. My favorite passage of the book is Peachy describing the endless list of mundane tasks Beth would need to take care of and then she says something to the effect of "If you can find time to fuck my husband somewhere in between all of that, kudos." Peachy and Beth's father is great. The book really delves into the good and bad of relationships -- sisters, parent-child, husband-wife. An interesting read.
