This is one of those books that works on many levels. The characters are very likeable and realistic. The action and suspense takes off from the beginning and doesn't let up. There is an underdog that has received a bad lot in life that you will end up rooting for. The idea of America's government imploding feels to realistic. There are science-fiction references dropped through the whole book. It is an explosive beginning to a series. Those are just a few reasons why you will enjoy this book. Once you start it, you will have to finish it. Half good, half bad.I'm going to give a very schizophrenic review of this book. On the one hand, it suffers badly from needing editing. Simple mistakes like cavalry vs Calvary were slightly annoying. But the head-hopping...oy vey. He hops from character to character multiple times in the same chapter, and many time in the same paragraph! The time changes...going backwards and forwards in time with no logical order drove me nuts trying to figure out if something happened before or after what I had already read in the last chapter! The characters were really shallow and a lot of it needed to be researched better, but...But I REALLY enjoyed the actual story. Story can trump all and I may even buy the next one to see how it progresses since it's not expensive. Richard could be a master storyteller with a little discipline.
