Coup D'Etat. By Ben Coes (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

Having read the first book in this series last week, I jumped right into this one eagerly—and that’s exactly how it felt: as though I was immediately plunged into thrilling, non-stop action, from cover to cover. The book never lets up, even for one page. My only criticism, though, is that there were times when I couldn’t help but think: “this is just too easy”—both on a detailed level, and on a general level. On the detailed level, in real life no hero—no matter how capable—can make every single kill so effortless, every bullet perfectly find its mark. And on the general level, the sequence of events strain credibility. Granted, many of the scenarios *are* in fact plausible, but taken together they just seem a bit too far-fetched. Despite that, though, the story was a pure pleasure to read, a true “page-turner”, and I look forward to reading the next book in the series! The second of the Dewey Andreas series, and admittedly skeptical after the first installment (Power Down), I nonetheless gave this sophomore effort a go...and glad that I did. Where the first book struggled to keep the reader interested in making far too many transitions, and not enough suspense, or action, Coup D'Etat does exactly the opposite. Hooking me from the first 50 pages, this novel is about the growing conflict between India and Pakistan, and one minor small town incident that leads the two countries to nuclear war. Dropping a nuclear bomb in Karoo, a small town in India, Pakistan is on the offensive and led by a religious zealot hell bent on destroying the neighboring country. The US, as an ally of India is brought in to protect and in doing an analysis of the situation, sees the long game as inevitable nuclear war with China - so they determine the threat between India and Pakistan must be neutralized and the crazy leader removed in a Coup d'etat. Enter Dewey Andreas, the only man alive to pull the operation off. The next few hundred pages put his small team together and run through a thoroughly entertaining operation. A great second effort from Ben Coes, and I'm optimistic for this series moving forward - a good read if you are a fan of Vince Flynn (RIP) and Brad Thor.
