Surely, there had to be a good reason because just the idea of doing it filled me with abject terror, and somehow, I’d actually followed through with it. Maybe it had seemed like a good idea at the time, but it stunk of desperation. It was the kind of thing someone would only do as a last recourse. It made it even more important for me to find out why I’d become a modern day Faust because in most versions of that story, things didn’t end well for him.The reason itched at the edge of my consciousness like a cut inside my mouth I couldn’t stop tonguing.
