Das Haus Am Hyde Park (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

Ok, so I really wanted to hate this book but couldn't quite do it. I had to keep reading for some unknown reason. However, there was plenty wrong with it. For starters, it could have been about half the length and still gotten the point across. Secondly, there is a fine line between an introspective psychological novel and a 450 page whine-fest. I was so glad when she finally got over herself. I don't mean to be callous, and I know that emotional pain needs to be worked through, but the way this was written was excruciating. I did enjoy some of the characterization, and the interactions between some of the characters were enjoyable. I guess that is some of the reason I stuck with the book. But overall, I don't recommend. Really -- don't do it! I've read all of Monica McInerney's books and this is one of my favorites. The premise is that the main character, Ella, is running away from her grief over the tragic loss of her 20 month old son, Felix. She hasn't spoken to her husband since the funeral almost 20 months prior or to her half-sister Jess, who was babysitting when Felix died. Ella is summoned to her great-uncle's house in London to help him with a project - a story concocted to get her to stop running away and try to confront her emotions. Will she ever reunite with Aidan or ever be able to forgive Jess? Really great read -- I finished it in about 4 days and couldn't put it down at times.
