Das Haus Der Verlorenen Düfte (2012) - Plot & Excerpts
The premise is so great - ancient perfumes that trigger past life memories! A great perfume house on the financial rocks! Mystery and intrigue! But I had to force myself to slog through the whole thing. The writing was almost Dan Brown in reader manipulative pacing and cliffhanger chapters. But rather than feeling much dramatic tension, I just felt mildly bored. Points for getting the perfume world jargon and feel right - this was a really pleasant surprise as the author had clearly done her research. But the mystery plot and the romantic entanglement wasn't very gripping, and the characters seemed flat. With every M.J. Rose book, I fall more and more in love with her work and her voice. I am so intrigued by the mystery of fragrance, having a very sensitive nose myself, and this series has been such a joy. I read these three out of order, but it didn't matter. The stories were still quite enjoyable, and absorbing. The rich history and gripping looks into France have been part of a catalyst of notes to places that I want to visit. Now I'm off to read The Hypnotist, her first in the reincarnation series. Great work!

It was just ok. I really enjoyed the past life parts the best. It seemed unfinished somehow.
