Data, A Love Story: How I Gamed Online Dating To Meet My Match (2013) - Plot & Excerpts
A very relatable story of angst, spreadsheets and self-determination. I have to admit that I kind of lost steam 3/4 the way through the book, and skimmed the last quarter. It's not so much a self-help book as the Odyssey through online dating and self-confidence, though the author has an appendix where she summarizes useful advice based on Things She Learned from this exercise. Which I will put on a list to possibly look at again when/if/how I update any online dating profile I might create. Take home information: Online dating algorithms only works as well as the data you input, so figure out what *YOU* want in a date/partner/spouse. This may take a while to figure out, so the even less-than-sucessful dates are important data points for you to reference. Makes me feel better about the whole ridiculous process. It's a refreshing read, as the author brings us through her dating adventures, as well as those 'behind the scenes' dialogues that goes on in people's heads that we don't normally verbalise out loud. Although the specific details of some algorithms and characteristics could make ploughing through quite a drag at times, these were necessary elements of the main gist of the whole story. The author is the heroine in her own story, yes, such courageous exposition of the process of finding the right match, facing her fears and insecurities, telling us all about the hits and misses, all about live and love, and the strong women in her family. An inspiration for all. These are real life events, more real than any reality TV you can watch.
