Date Night (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

A short story which takes place immediately after Zero at the bone. We get a glimpse of how things are working for Jack and D. They go to a party together, but D soon retreats from the hubbub of people around feeling a little displaced. He finds solace in the company of a child, and we see how it is easier for D to answer to the sincerity of the child's innocent but blunt questions than to the complexities of social interaction. Short but very enlightening. What a great, even though a very short story which follows Zero at the Bone, which I loved.Jack & D (Anson) have slowly crept into my heart. They are such real people to me now....and how good it is to see how good their relationship is. D....never thought I would engage with him in such a way....i love getting to know what makes him tick!!!! And Jack....what a likeable and fabulous character. He has such a way with people...such a optimistic and upbeat person...how can anyone not adore him!!!! He just has this good and happy effect on D which I find so endearing.Using Ellen, Portia's small daughter as a means to talk about issues such as acceptance and understanding was clever and very well done. The interaction between her and D was touching and sweet and and sad - when D remembered his daughter Jill...damm heartbreaking.Jack...he's bringing light, happiness and love back into D's life....can't wait to see what NEXT!!!!

I loved the "you go with Uncle Jack, right? You know, like cereal goes with milk" part.
