De Bakkersdochter (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

From the minute I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down. Absolutely love the character of Elsie. From her younger years growing up in WWII Germany, to her years in El Paso at the German Bakery. This book was not only entertaining, but also very educational. I learned quite a bit about the horrors of Germany during WWII. A very dark time in history, we must never forget. As George Santayana once said "Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it." Read this quickly. The characters from the past felt more developed to me than the ones in the present, did feel a little hit over the head by the metaphor!! between the border crisis and death camps, and the plotting felt a little forced to me. Yet the characters did feel real at times and the story itself had a nice message about authenticity and character. Not exactly my kind of book but if you like books of this genre and writing style I think you'll like this too.

What do You think about De Bakkersdochter (2012)?

I wish the author had left out the Texas parallel. Elsie's story was much more interesting.

Like most other reviewers, I enjoyed Elsie's story far more than Reba's.
