De Kelder (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

This was an excellent book.It started a little slow for me because I had not read the prior books and did not know the characters, but once the plot got moving, it was hard to put down. Being familiar with the geography of Minnesota would have helped as well because I could not keep the various locales straight and how close/far they were to one another. I listened to the audio book and the narrator was quite annoying in his voices. I think he was trying for a poor imitation of Fargo, but sometimes it came off sounding Irish??? The one character is supposedly from Las Vegas, but he gave her a southern accent. It was distracting and took away from the enjoyment of the story. This is my first novel by Brian Freeman so I came into the characters cold. I wish I'd known Stride before this book but I liked the writing enough to go back to read the earlier stories. That's not to say it doesn't work in isolation - it does - but I felt my appreciation of the characters would have been different with the knowledge gained in earlier stories. This was a fast moving tale that I really enjoyed but - I had a big problem with the behaviour of one of the characters. It just wasn't- er - sensible BUT at the end of the novel - it's sort of explained but it was a long while to wait - thinking this character is just 'not right' I'm trying not to spoil things. Wasn't keen on the ending but I did enjoy the writing very much.
