Deader Still (2009) - Plot & Excerpts

Deader Still by Anton Strout is the second book in the Simon Canderous series. Based in New York City, the series revolves around reformed thief Simon, trying to use his power of psychometry (the ability to learn about an object's past via touch) for good by joining the Department of Extraordinary Affairs. The DEA has been set up to protect NY citizens from the supernatural, and to hide the supernatural from ordinary beings. Simon finds his power a mixed blessing, as touching objects and people often leads to debilitating and unwanted visions. He is mentored by Connor, his supervisor at the Department of Extraordinary Affairs, and his girl friend Jane, a previous cultist. In this story Simon's grown up a bit, and joined the Old Foggies. He is approached by someone from his past who forces him to aid her in one last crime. At the same time, he is battling zombies, vampires, and bad buys. Lots of laugh out loud moments and fun, but most interesting to me is the side story of Connor's brother who disappeared when they were children. What happened to him, and who would now be sending notes to Connor about it? This was a solid read. It certainly isn't spectacular but it definitely felt less forced than its predecessor, and when the story really got going it was certainly an interesting read. I just think that it lacks that extra edge of realism that would really add to a book like this - most UF is set in our world just with hidden fantastical creatures, and its done so well that it feels like it may be a possibility. This book though... it seems like a whole different world, the DEA for example seems very childish and foppish, whilst FOGies while a nice little bit of word play it just seemed fun, not real, and inspector Quimbly, ugh, he just doesn't seem real. You know what I mean? It just seems really childish throughout - which is not to say that it doesn't have its serious moments, it does. And it is a good read. It just isn't an amazing book.If the author can make the world seem more real and serious then, with the clues set up within these first two book, he could have a really good series on his hand. I know I will be reading the rest of the series, regardless of what happens, as I may get lucky and he could produce the 'real, serious' book that lurks beneath the surface.Anyway, you will enjoy reading this. No doubt.Have fun reading.
