Deadman Wonderland, Vol. 1 (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

3.5 It was slow in the beginning but the oddness started to kick in about midway. This seems to fit in with Doubt, a dark and yet humorous manga... I'm not sure what to make of it exactly since not everything has been revealed yet. The prison concept was interesting (and I shouted PANOPTICON! when I saw it). The credits idea reminds me of the monetary system in Arata, but it was refreshing enough. Why I didn't rate this a 4 was also due to the drawing style, when I couldn't tell what was happening during some action sequences. But otherwise, enjoyable and I'd read more of this series. I'm really on the fence here. I enjoyed this manga, but only after coming to terms with the fact that I needed to shut off certain significant brain areas first.Deadman Wonderland is the name of Japan's only for-profit prison, and in addition to incarcerating prisoners, it also turns them into entertainment celebs, who do various things to entertain audiences. The inmates earn points, the prison earns money, and the end goal is to rebuild Tokyo, which was destroyed in a flood some ten years previous. One wonders if this is how some in Japan views American prisons in part.Anyway, the programs they put the prisoners into don't exactly have a high level of safety concern. Death is totally a possibility. And if you don't compete, all sorts of other problems can arise. And here we get some of the things you need to not ask questions about. They remark at one point that there are different levels of criminal in here. So, what sorts of criminals do they use? And how do they keep it stocked? The fatality level in the one event we see is pretty high. So, are they putting like, jaywalkers in? Are they bringing in criminals from other countries? So, in the middle of this, we get our main character, apparently wrongly accused of mass murder and incarcerated. I do like that it takes him a little while to find his backbone - it feels a bit realistic - but otherwise I'm not terribly invested in him yet. Two of the characters he meets once it prison however - including one heck of an exuberant girl - I found significantly more interesting.Be warned - as you can probably guess, this manga is pretty gruesome, but the surprise to me was that it's also fairly oddball. It never got to full-on slapstick, but I was sort of waiting for it.All that being said, it managed to entertain me quite a lot, it has great pacing and the premise is different enough that I'm willing to put aside some of the oddities and will give volume 2 a try.
