Dean Koontz's Frankenstein, Volume 1: Prodigal Son (2008) - Plot & Excerpts
Dean Koontz wrote a great introduction about why he chose to redo the story of Frankstein. This is my first comic book so I'm sorry if my review is on the short side. My boyfriend got Prodigal Son for me from the library, because he knows I'm a Dean Koontz fan. I quickly got into the story and was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. The art is really good and the colors used are amazing. I liked how this is a very modern take on a classic novel! People are popping up all over a Louisiana town missing body parts or organs and the only person who truely knows what's happening is very, very far away. Investigators seek motives and ways the victims are connected while Deucalion makes his journey to Louisiana. After getting a glimpse of the villan, it's not hard to see how he could commit such horrible crimes! Victor Helios only sees his experiments as his building "an alpha class nearly equal to himself." The bonus story at the end is pretty weird, but hey, it is Frankenstein related! The story is from Helios' journal and shows us one of his expiraments gone terribly wrong. I have to say that I loved Prodigal Son vol. 1 and definitely plan to eventually read the novels! I can't wait for volume 2! I was so looking forward to reading this when I first discovered it. I've been a fan of Dean Koontz for many years and I thought that he could do something truly incredible with the concept of Frankenstein and the monster. Unfortunately this was a terrible let down. The writing was juvenile at best, as though it was aimed at pre-teens. Perhaps my expectations were too high but this book falls far short of Koontz' other works.
What do You think about Dean Koontz's Frankenstein, Volume 1: Prodigal Son (2008)?
I love Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and this is a pretty interesting twist on it.
