Death Bringer (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

This is probably my favorite book of Skulduggery Pleasant series.Skulduggery and Valkyrie's relationship is developing from a mere teacher and apprentice or partners to good friends, heart to heart friendship (lovely), not that I want it to stay like that forever. I want more development. This is getting more and more exciting. The battle of Darquesse & Lord Vile is so awesome, I can't even find words to say about that. But, my gut tells me that all will go wrong. It's Landy's work afterall. He's a sadist. Look what he'd done to Tanith. =_=I'll continue reading Kingdom of The Wicked after the 9th book is out. I can't take it if something badly happens to my favorite characters. If I was nine years old, I might really enjoy this. But as an adult, reading a story in the series about Skulduggery Pleasant, a skeletal detective magician fighting his gleefully evil nemeses was, at best, mildly amusing, and at worst, tediously boring. The book converts a lot of horror tropes for older children in such a way as to give them goosebumps without really scaring them. This is admirable, but it's all been done before. Pleasant himself is a delightfully original character: changing the wisecracking detective cliché into an undead sorcerer is certainly entertaining. And there are some other inventive touches. Unfortunately, Pleasant's assistant, the female lead Valkyrie, is dull and predictable, since loner goth girls are about as stereotyped as they come in fiction (and in real life, for that matter). Add to this the fact that it was the first book starring Pleasant that I'd read, the rather elaborate plot that hurtles forward at a breakneck speed was not as easy to follow as I would have thought, since it often references characters and events from previous books in the series. I lost interst about half-way through and couldn't being myself to finish it. I just couldn't see its appeal to older readers.

What do You think about Death Bringer (2011)?

It's a guaranteed action-packed thrill ride with any of the Skulduggery Pleasant books, but this, the sixth installment in the nine book series, improves on all of it's predecessors. Rather than recycling the plot of the first book like the first few sequels did, Landy mixes things up a little and makes the 'big threat' a little more personal for both Valkyrie and Skulduggery. Both face off against themselves and each other at more than one point, along with a host of new monsters and enemies. The plot arc is building steadily and Landy takes it into some cool, exciting places. The writing is as sharp and fast-paced as always and the action sequences (even if they are sometimes overlong) are well written. The witty humor comes and thick and fast, even if it does fall flat sometimes. Overall, this is probably in my top two favorite books of the series so far. Highly recommended. But if you're a newcomer, start with the first book, you won't regret it.
