Deep Sea And Foreign Going: Inside Shipping, The Invisible Industry That Brings You 90% Of Everything (2013) - Plot & Excerpts
This is a very readable book about the workings of the shipping industry. It sounds like a dry topic but Rose George focuses on the human angle as she works through the different aspects of the business, which gives it warmth and life. I particularly enjoyed the sections about Pirates and the Missions that voluntarily provide aid and comfort to sailors. If you are at all curious about this vital part of our economy then this is definitely a book worth reading. Infrastructure. We never give it much thought, and that’s ok: there’s too much to be aware of. Shipping, though... shipping is big. In terms of lives affected, social benefits and costs, ecological impact. We really need to be aware of this invisible world, and Rose George’s book is a thoughtful and enjoyable way to learn about it. The frequent context switches can be jarring, hence four stars, but nonetheless strongly recommended.

Really well written history of what may be the most taken-for-granted profession on earth.

Very interesting but, strangely, pace is considerably slowed by the piracy section.
