Definitely, Maybe In Love (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

I liked this book because my favourite kind of chick lit are those in which both girl and boy don´t hit it off at the beginning and spend most of the book in heated arguments until they realize this is so because they like each other, leading to strong feelings. This book could keep it up.Nonetheless, it had a lot of flaws to me. I cannot point exactily what was that I liked but I can tell most of the things I didn´t like (sorry for that).First of all, this is a loosely modern Pride & Prejudice adaptation, which gets bonus points. It diverges in a lot of aspects, however. For one, Darcy (in the book, Henry Knightly Third) is not the type who doesn´t know what to say and express himself many times showing he likes Spring (Lizzy). Since the first interaction between them it appears he likes her. When they are together, she´s the focus of all his attention. This is why part of the angst in the book is not explained. Part of the book she knows already she likes him, so why suffer so much if he shows her he likes her too? My biggest dislike is the heroine. She´s very stereotyped (she is an idealist and is all for ecology): she braids her hair, is a vegetarian, gets in protests. I don´t have a problem with any of these, but the book sustains she began with all of it because it was a way to show her ideas, not because she particularly liked these choices. And she complains a lot of Henry because he dislikes and loudly despises her choices but what shows is that she dislikes and despises his choices more. I think he shows more respect for her choices than she shows for his. She has an attitude of being above everyone, so politically correct, she thinks she is better than everyone and keeps trying to change them. The author does not agree with her heroine´s attitude, so much so that even her friends don´t like this aspect of her and in the end she changes. Lizzy was not like this. She was an independente thinker, didn´t do things for show, and she didn´t preach them for the rest of the world.I think it was too much of love at first sight for Henry. In P&P Darcy sees Lizzy speaking and we all follow him falling in love for her witty. Since the beginning Henry is fascinated with Spring despite her dull altercations and although it is said to happen, we don´t follow any of the arguments that they used to convince each other in her thesis development and therefore we don´t see them falling in love.Despite all of these flaws, which were irritating through all book,I enjoyed reading it. This book is a modernized retelling of Pride and Prejudice - pretty much the same plot outline, but with two college students at Stanford. I enjoyed the romance, the build up and the solidifying of Spring and Henry's relationship. Some parts and characters were maybe a bit too contrived for me, but overall, I enjoyed the build up and seeing how it paired/went along with the original Austen version. A fun, quick, and easy read with some fun, steamy, kissing romance. More like 3 1/2 stars!
