I found it strange that Katri's struggle with her different appearance and unusually logical personality could grab my interest so quickly. Jansson quickly sets up the adversarial position of this shunned young woman, determined to take advantage of an apparently sentimental, reclusive and wealthy old artist in order to provide for her brother. A brother whom the villagers see as simple minded. The outward politeness of Scandinavian society was quickly stripped away in this book which alternates between third person view of events and Katri's thoughts. But don't be shocked to find out things are not the way they appear.
