Der Beste Tag Meines Lebens (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

I really liked how this book takes on autism. The story was good but not great. Being a teacher, I immediately questioned the treatment of the main character by other students in the school. I felt this part of the story was poorly researched and certainly cliched. Most kids at schools today tend to take kids with disabilities under their wing rather than ridicule and bully them. That being said, the book is worth reading. Colin Fischer has to make flash cards to understand the emotions on people's faces. That's because he has Asperger's syndrome. He'll tell you all about it if you ask him or seem confused. His learning difference makes Colin's life a bit difficult, but he's learned to deal. However when something out of routine happens, Colin has a hard time adjusting. So when a gun goes off during a birthday celebration at school one day, Colin is surprised that he's not more freaked out. In fact, he finds himself fascinated. No one was injured but there will be serious consequences. Something bugs him about the the events following the shooting. One young man is accused of bringing the gun to school and firing it off at lunchtime. Colin is not convinced it's Dylan. So like his hero, Sherlock Holmes, Colin sets out to find out just who did bring the gun to school and fire it off. This is a so-so book with a great storyline. Unfortunately it reads like an autistic s brain, which makes sense but it doesn't quite work, in my opinion. It results in choppy writing with no natural flow. It was a difficult read.

A favorite of mine. Great story. Great characters. The ending makes me hope for a sequel?
