Der Ungewöhnliche Held Aus Zimmer 13B (2014) - Plot & Excerpts
At fifteen years old, Adam Spencer Ross is coping. He’s coping with the divorce of his parents, coping with the needs of an adoring-but-troubled stepbrother, and coping with the challenges of obsessive-compulsive disorder—and those are just the problems he tells people about.Adam doesn’t expect to find love in his Young Adult OCD Support Group, but when Robyn Plummer walks into his life, he is immediately smitten. When the group’s therapist assigns each of them to take on a superhero identity, Adam leaps at the chance to be the Batman to Robyn’s Robin and finds he has a new motivation to get himself better. But the road to recovery is not always easy. Adam has secrets, and the closer he gets to Robyn, his therapist, and his new friends in Group, the harder those secrets are to keep. Why You’ll Love ItNot all authors can tackle the complex subject of mental illness with Toten’s tact and understanding. Toten shows obsessive-compulsive disorder in all its complications in The Unlikely Hero of Room 13B, but she’s also funny and heartfelt. And Adam’s story is empowering; he may have OCD, but that doesn’t make him any less of a hero.Choice Quote: “I believe that I fell in love with Robyn Plummer last Monday. This feeling is extremely uncomfortable. I would stop it if I could.” I've never suffered from OCD but this seems like a pretty realistic portrayal of a teenager in the throws of OCD, first love, therapy and taking care of a parent. It seems that so many kids find themselves laid with the heavy burden of managing a parent after a family breakup. Adam is the one who makes everything okay for everyone but himself. Even the new girl in therapy class. A very good read although the adults in this book don't seem to get it at all. Well maybe Adam's step mom...
