Destiny's Detour (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

Nothing happened in this book. It was like reading a journal. "First we did this, then we did that, then this happened." I kept waiting for something to happen, but it never really did. Any conflict was handled quickly and never a big deal. It just needed more. The writing was also stiff, wooden. Dialogue had no contractions, but they dropped their g's, and said ya'll. People do say ya'll, and drop their g's, but in the same sentence, they won't say "I am" or whatever. Also, we were beaten over the head with the fact that the fathers were former NFL players. And it was way over the top with the "dude, that's my sister" from David. Just not for me. For me, this story is a 2.5 star read, but that should not indicate anything other than it was a good engaging read for me. In general, my favorite romances are where the angst in the story is something other than he relationship itself. So this book really fit the bill for that. I was engaged in how much the H loved the h and that, for me was the best part of the book. I wasn't a big fan of being 'told' the story. That's how it felt and because of that, I was skipping paragraphs to get to the point of the chapter. The other thing for me is that everything was just coincidentally the perfect scenario. No one gets busted for underage drinking, that the parents just happen to consent to, no one gets busted for fights, everyone has loads of money, fame and fortune, and the sun, moon and stars align so that the four main characters have HEA's. This was quite a bit of fantasy for me and totally not believable. But on the other hand, sometimes you just really need to read a book like this. It just takes the worries away from everyday life and you get a chance to escape into a perfect world. And really? Who doesn't need that every once in a while? Outside of the totally romantic, possessive and protective hero, this book gave the h ( who, btw I didn't start out liking too much), a chance to grow and rethink her dreams and be not only comfortable with her detours, but actually loving them more than her initial dream. This is a great message because who's life doesn't take an unexpected turn every once in a while, that you initially think will be devastating and it turns out to be the best thing that ever happened to you? So yes, all in all, I ended up liking the book and finished it with a positive end result.
