Detroit City Is The Place To Be: The Afterlife Of An American Metropolis (2012) - Plot & Excerpts
This book is largely a perspective piece, which touches on history but largely conveys views, thoughts, and feeling for the inner workings of the city from the author's PoV. Having spent formidable years in south-central Michigan, I had a lot of context on the city; this book filled in many historical and cultural gaps and I really appreciated that. The story telling is non-linear, which I think throws off a lot of non-fiction lovers and accounts for many of the bad reviews. This is a non-fiction book written with a literary style... and, personally, I loved that. Is Detroit, the model of a failed industry-fueled city, a portent of things to come, a laboratory for the future of cities? Each chapter is a different take. The failure of an economy, the dwindling of public services, the settlement and growth of a city, the potential for urban arts or urban farming or other tools for revitalization...a lot of territory is covered and thoughts provoked that are wider than just this one city. --Melissa
