I'm not sure why I picked this book up the other day. The cover, quite honestly, was a bit off-putting. But I'm glad I did. This was by no means a perfect book, not even for Juvenile Fiction, which is where I found it. The story did remind more very strongly of the movie Anastasia, only with the supernatural element removed. I actually didn't have much of a problem with the "he loves me, he loves me not" aspect of this book -- it felt like the main characters were inexperienced teenagers, which wasn't far off. The characters weren't quite fleshed out as fully as I would have liked, except maybe for the empress, and that could have been because I kept hearing Angela Lansbury's voice Actual rating: 3.5 stars, but I round up. I really liked the style of writing. It is really cool when the author shows more than one character's perspective. And, for the most part, none of the characters really bothered me. Pretty much all of their decisions made sense to me. I wish the book would have been longer though. It would have been really nice to see the story develop more, and to see where the story could have gone. All in all it was: familiar, fun, short, to the point, and a good book.
What do You think about Diamond Secret (2009)?
pretty good. wish the story didn't feel so rushed, like it was a sketch.
