Die Juliette Society (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

It would be foolish to expect a novel for the ages from Sasha Grey. I'd like to point this out: The author in this case is suggestive to what you're about to read. Sasha is an expert of describing sex scenes, but she lacks the ability of distinguishing between what's important to write and dwell on and what's not. I found myself getting bored to death with several chapters that aimed little to the reader's perception about the book. Other than that, I liked the plot, although, I have one huge disappointment to voice: The title has NOTHING to do with the plot of the book. The Juliette Society and what happens in it is only described in one little chapter and way late in the book. I feel like I've been deceived into believing there's a peak in it while actually there's not. Nonetheless, 5/5 if you're into reading smut and you care little about the plot. On the Juliette Society by Sasha Grey. The main story follows a girl called Catharine at college. She studies Film(no surprise as Grey also studied film). It follows her as she explores her sexual inhibitions, imaginations and lusts. Eventually taking her to a secretive sex society called the Juliet Society. The book starts with a list of things Grey wants you to do for her, one is not to be offended. That I found strange as I wasn’t offended and I imagine all the people reading this porn stars book wouldn’t be offend either. Grey definitely knows how to write about sex and those paragraphs are intoxicating and feed the imagination. The imagery of her writing is very good and at times very vivid as if it’s mostly autobiographical. And that’s what it feels like a more than half autobiography(writing a lot about what she knows; sex, films) with bits of her own imagination thrown in. There are great bits of Greys own philosophies in the book which do seem very well thought on and could even make some sense. I probably wouldn’t read it again however the book is decent and easy to read so can be finished very quickly. A very decent maybe good attempt at a first book. Well done to Sasha Grey.
