Die Pforte (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

My rating for this book kept going between 2-4. I liked many aspects of it but also found several implausible situations that took away from the enjoyment.I found the main character, Travis, dull and did not find any interest to his backstory of being a mafia child raised to do bad but is basically a good person. The author's descriptions were good and parts where the female protagonist, Paige, is being tortured made me cringe. But then the scene is peppered with inconsistencies. For some reason the author wants me to believe that these highly trained bad guys are squeamish at the site of blood and that someone with little tactical experience can take them out with practically no effort. The Breach that opens up from a scientific experiment is an interesting concept and yet the whole premise that in the late 70's and during the Cold War the US government agrees to open this scientific find to a multi-national force borders on preposterous. He also expects the reader to believe that other government agencies wouldn't jump at the chance to create their own breach with potentially world-changing goodies coming out the other end.I was also bothered when a European city is basically taken over by an "entity" and the inhabitants come en masse to attack a building and yet somehow a small handful of snipers fend them off with uncanny success. Take a look at military history and find out how difficult it is to halt the advance of a greater force even with a trained force armed with large caliber automatic weapons and high explosives. One minor annoyance was the consistent interchange of "clip" versus "magazine." These are two different things. The book, for the most part, did hold my interest, and I will give the next book a chance to set a higher standard than the first. Wow. What a mindfuck. The ultimate time travel paradox novel (and, from what I read of the summaries of the rest of the series, series as well).A hiker discovers a downed plane, which leads him to a secret that the government's been keeping for years -- there is a source of alien technology. Like an invisible suit. A hostility/aggression trigger. And an entity that seemingly wants to destroy the world. It's a mad dash from beginning to end, with mysteries to solve, things blowing up, impossible technology and, yeah, a tiny bit of romance too. The characters are more than a touch shallow, but then, this is an action adventure book and, if it were a movie, the explosions would more than make up for any lack there. Just... what a mindfuck.
