Die Stillen Wasser Des Todes (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

I did not realize until this moment that this was the 14th book in the series. That actually explains a lot. These individuals were well comfortable with each other and seemed to have a lot of back story that was alluded to but never explained. For that reason, I felt like I was missing something, a little left out in the beginning of the book. I am curious about the rest of the series and may pick up a few more some time.In general though, this book was well-written, there was a strong sense of place and classic British mystery about it, but while the story was quite convoluted, and there were enough red herrings to feed the entire cast for a month, in the end I put the book down and thought, "um, okay, and?"I mapped out the actual crimes and timeline in my head and it's quite a spectacular bit of mystery-crafting, I did know from the moment the killer appeared in the book that he was, if not 100% guilty, at least involved in something, other crimes, some of the murders, rapes, what-have-you. I felt that there were a few things that didn't add up in the end, justice was not served. But I think that's how the author intended it. First because I'm sure there's a #15 in the works (or already here), and second because life does not get tied up neatly with a bow at the end. That's one of the least satisfying aspects of life, really.Funnily enough, this is one of those books that the more you think about it the better you like it. I am curious about the back story of the two protagonists, and I would like to go back to the beginning of these mysteries and watch them develop. While I was actually reading the mystery, I didn't think I cared all that much, but in the end they're actually fascinating characters.I guess that I not only recommend this book, but the series, and I can't wait for 2014's book challenge to be over so I can go back to them as well!Book of the Day for August 8, 2014! It was a little difficult getting into this book ... well into a series of which I'd read none previously. The rowing milieu, however, was quite engaging. And by part way through I'd pretty much figured out who was who (must be a number of recurring characters). I would read others in this series. I enjoy English mystery-procedurals. I find them cozy and relaxing. Adding the "I've learned a bit about rowing" benefit made it all the better.
