Comfortable read packed with a good amount of information and a strong perspective from the Muslim world. The book consists of history from the beginning of Islam to the modern day and discusses the societies, cultures, politics and economics that influenced the times. It is written in a historical and factual style that collects the info and presents the arguments and debates that continue on today.Great introductory read for people trying to understand the Muslim world and the internal/external conflicts it faces. If you want to understand how we came to be at such odds with the Middle East (author calls it The Middle World), read this book. The author is a secular Afghan-American. He takes you on a journey through Islamic history beginning with Muhammad and continuing right down to present day, explaining the different sects and how they have affected Islam overall. He also explains how the West affected these people, sometimes unwittingly, sometimes carelessly, and sometimes exploitatively and how corruption in their leadership allowed it. Very thorough, easily understood treatment of a convoluted subject. The author reads and his voice is easy and conversational.
thoroughly enjoyed following the author through history as seen from a Muslim perspective.
