I actually enjoyed listening to this. The narrator was good and spoke clearly, and there were few if any whispered passages. The story was hard-boiled crime drama with a twist -- magic, especially magic potions, were the new drug on the street -- and the protagonist is a former magic potion "cooker" gone straight, now working as a cop. The author played some tricks with names and such (Prospero, Crowley Prison, etc), which have become somewhat commonplace amongst the urban fantasy crowd, but the story was enjoyable, and there were enough twists and turns to keep me interested. If there is a sequel (of course there will be...), I will definitely pick it up. Gritty police procedural with magic in the world. Heroine detective with an aversion to using magic (she feels like she is recovering addict) who finds herself between a rock and a hard place. Kate whines a bit, but does what needs doing. She is floundering and even though she acts tough, she is learning still. Feels real, the bad guys are basically drug pushers and the stakes very high.Lots of action, lots of chaos and lots of emotions. Would make a great TV series.Looking forward to the next one.Paranormal, but without any romance, pretty harsh world and a character full of hard edges.
