Dogsong (1999) - Plot & Excerpts

tDogsong is a fiction book by Gary Paulsen, it is about Russel who is a young teen who can't find himself. He feels lost with his life so he goes to this old guys house for help. The old mans name is Oogruk. Oogruk is a wise old fellow who lives close to Russel in their Eskimo village. Dogsong was published in 1985 by Simon & Schuster, Inc. Simon & Schuster, Inc was founded in New York, has published about 2,000 titles, and is one of the four biggest U.S. publishers.tRussel tells his dad that something is wrong but he doesn't know what. His dad says I know so go see Oogruk. Oogruk is an old blind, but very wise guy who lives close to Russel and his dads winter house they stay in during the whole winter. In the summer they move to there summer house. When Oogruk tells Russel that the same thing happened to him when he was a boy. Of course when Oogruk was a boy they stilled lived in the "old times." They didn't use riffles, snowmobiles, and other similar modern day conveniences Oogruk says what helped was when he rode on a dogsled as far as he could and lived off the land. He tells Russel some tips, gives him a bow with some arrows, his dogs, and his dogsled. He also received a big bear parka and pants, a smaller layer of squirrel skin under layer for both top and bottom, three blankets and a sleeping bag which where also bear skin. Oogruk was a very old man like I mentioned earlier so he told Russel to take him along on the ride. A little while into his ride Oogruk said let me out and you ride on. Russel not agreeing to this at all but after much arguing he left him there. After going about a half mile he felt wrong of what he had done so he turned around. He got closer and closer until he saw Oogruk. He had died. Realizing he needed to go. Russel went for many miles leaving behind his old life at the village. On his long run he gets great at running the dogs and shooting his food with his bow. A very long while into his run he came upon this snowmobile. The first thing he did was felt the engine to see if it was warm. It was very cold which means that it had not recently ran. Russel opened up this compartment and found a gas bottle and he opened it up and looked inside. Empty! There was foot steps so he followed them. A storm came before he found this person and he knew it was impossible to find this person anymore so he set up camp and waited the storm out. When he was asleep during the storm he had a dream. tIn his dream a woman said "Good luck" to the man who was standing by their tent door. She was wishing him luck because he was going to the ocean to hunt. This woman was his wife and she was next to two kids. The man was Russel and he did not know who the kids or the woman was. He thought that he was seeing into the future of his life. Then next day when he woke up he continued in the direction of the feet print he saw from earlier. Finally Russel came upon a person with its head facing down in the snow so he could not tell if it was a man or woman. He finally got the person on its back and realized it was a woman. He was taking off her jacket because it was not very warm. He was going to wrap her in his blankets when he saw she was pregnant and practically dead. He set up camp and warmed her up and fed her. She told him that in her village she was not married and got pregnant. It is not okay so she was kicked out. She set off on her snowmobile. They stayed together and went six days without food. Both him, Nancy, and the dogs where very week because of no food. Russel set up camp left Nancy there and went hunting. For many miles he could not find any game. He got very nervous until he came upon some tracks. He followed them until he came upon a huge polar bear. The polar bear killed one of his dogs and knocked out Russel in the battle to try and get the polar bear. He finally killed the bear and rushed back some of the meat to Nancy after he fed the dogs and himself the nice and fresh bloody uncooked meat. When Russel got to Nancy she was again almost dead. He brought her back and once she ate she had the baby. When the baby was out it was dead and Nancy new it. Before she really saw it she yelled to Russel to take it away and leave it. The next day Russel noticed her turning slightly yellow. tHe asked "What way to your village" tShe said "We are not close." tRussel thought hew new where a small village was so he headed off hoping that they would get there in time to get a doctor to help Nancy. They arrived and survived.tOverall this was an okay story but for me very slow. Most of the first part of the book was just telling about life. I do understand telling that but really, the whole first part of the book? It also just ended when they got to the village. I want to know what happened to Nancy. Does she die? Did Russels dream ever come true? Does he ever go back to his village or see his dad? It was not the best book and I was really disappointed because I have read a lot of other books by Gary Paulsen and they are amazing! I would not recommend this book to anyone.tAfter reading about life in an Eskimo village and how they live I did think it is very interesting. It has made me want to do a little research about that. I wish Gary Paulsen would have ended it better and not told so much at the begging about Russel's life in the village.

Dogsong by Gary Paulsen is the tale of a teenager who finds himself at an important crossroads in his life. Russel Susskit is a fourteen-year-old Eskimo boy who lives with his father. And there is only one thing he hates that wake him up every day his fathers coughing. The thing that always makes him depressed is his father. After the coughing and the spitting there was the sound of fire being lit, a sound that he looked forward waking up.the main character is Russel Susskit the eskimo boy he wands to be alone and go fined some where to go and stay he wants to fined his destiny. The cold, forbidding winter days are short and the nights are long in the small village on the tundra. Each morning, Russel is awakened by the sound of his father's coughing and the smell of diesel fuel. For Russel Susskit and the other Eskimos in this out-of-the-way village, every day is the same. Russel is suspicious and distrustful of things and people who come from Outside. he wants to explore and see the outer world. its really difficult to fallow the plot because there is another character every one talks about Oogruk. There is no antagonist in my book because the oy did not have any enemies so their was a protagonist is Russel because the book only talks about this book. the boy goes and talks to Oogurk .And Oogurk starts saying weird stuff. like he knows songs that can make deers come to him so he can kill it and he knew a song that can make birds go different ways. I think that the Arthur is trying to say that you can do what ever you want. None can stop you from doing what you want because its your choice to stay or go fined your destiny its really your opinion this choice might hurt because it only happens once. I think its really believable story that every one should do what he or she wants. overall i think this book should be read because of who its based on a life story and it happens when just some times people have to fined their destiny and leave its a very interesting book. i would read another book by this author because its all based on life lesson that I could really use in the future. i think this book is made for people that like the outdoors and they like to discover a lot. What do You think about Dogsong (1999)?

In my perspective this book was good but not great. This book is about a Eskimo boy named Russel unsatisfied with his life, so he decideds to go visit a wise old man named ogrock, Ogrock sets him on a adventure to find his song and learn the old ways. Russel has many challenges that he must face to keep going on his adventure. my favorit part of the book is when Russel knows he has to cross the ice to get to the seals, the dogs start to get scared and hesitate russel could see that they have already tried this with Ogrock. Ths is my fovorit part of the book because this is when the Dogs show their weekneses. I would recoment this book to people that like relistic adventure. Although the book got boring in times it had a lot of action parts that would just knock you off your chair. This was a beutiful, effective book, and i hope you read it.

The title of this book is Dogsong. The author is Gary Paulson. Dogsong has 176 pages and the genre is biography. in this book the main character is Russel. He lives with his dad at the beginning of the book but he doesn't know what to do with his life so he goes to man named Oogruk's house. This man Oogruk was the founder of the village Russel lives in. Oogruk starts to give Russel a lot of advise so Russel moved into his house to get more advise. The most import thing that Oogruk tells Russel is that everyone in the old days had their own song but a precher told them they would got to hell if the kept singing their songs so they all stopped and their songs were forgotten. Oogruk told Russel he would help him find Russel's song if he could remember but Russel would have to discover the rest himself. While he lives with Oogruk Russel uses Oogruk his dogs and sled. The Russel pays in "rent" by hunting for Oogruk. One day when Russel gets ready to go hunting out on the ice for seal Oogruk forces Russel to take him with. Oogruk comes out on the ice and tells Russel out of nowhere to run into the woods and not look back. But Russel aruges because he doesn't want to let Oogruk stay on the ice by himself. Oogruk forced Russel to run and that it was Oogruks time. So Russel runs but then starts to understand what Oogruk meant about his time and turns back to go get him but when he gets there Oogruk had already died. Russel then keeps running into the woods. Russel meets someone in the wood as he roams through the woods. The have a small no a big problem but that is something you will have to read to find out about. I did like this book a lot and I would like to know if there is a sequel to this book. I would read another like this. Out of five stars I would give this book a 5.

CATEGORY: REQUIRED AUTHORDogsong followed an eskimo teenager feeling kind of stuck in between worlds. His father constantly reminds of Jesus but Russel thinks that's useless, and begins to hate the sound of his father's coughing in the morning and the sound of the snow mobiles being turned on. Russel's father notices and decides to send him to see an older man in their town, Oogruk. Oogruk tells Russel stories about how things used to be and teaches him the way of dog sledding and hunting without a gun. As Russel uses Oogruk's dogs, he becomes better and better at his sledding until eventually Oogruk tells Russel that he needs to leave and ride with his dogs until he has found his song and becomes a man. Russel decides that this is what he wants to do and begins on an adventure across the continent.I really enjoyed this one. It had the feel of the grand, epic adventure but also posed a serious question contrasting cultural tradition and technology. Russel goes on this trip with no idea of where he's headed and Oogruk reminds him, and the readers, that the destination doesn't matter but it's the journey that's important. It's the growing, and the experiences and the development of you and your adventure that matter. Russel eventually finds his song but only after almost dying multiple times and getting back up and continuing on in his endeavour.
