Dominion (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

Freebie, change of pace, ambivalent. So many vampire stories out there, the religion thing grates at me, but even more, I'm wondering when BDSM so completely took over the literary world. Is it really not enough to fuck like animals? Seriously, two surrenders are way hotter than a priest with control and skydaddy issues.Of course, I have OCD and can't walk away from the middle of a story. *grumblegrumble* It would probably be easier to describe what is right with the book rather than what is wrong. If would certainly be faster. In a nutshell, the plot is extremely interesting even if it reads as though we smashed different stories together to make this one. I was intrigued by the idea of a priest turned vampire and a wannabe vampire hunter teaming up for supernatural battle and that's where the good stopped.Things I hated...The characters are pretty one dimensional. We're told about their many facets, but I didn't actually "see" any of them. I could fill in the blanks as all the characters are also archetypal bullet points, but that just reaffirms my point. It's poorly edited. Descriptions of people change from chapter to chapter. Imagine if you read Harry Potter and his eyes changed from blue to brown all the time, but somehow no matter the color, they were still his mother's eyes? Would you be able to connect with that information? Would you care? There's too much going on with poor explanations of the nuances so you don't know what is important, what isn't important nor where we're going with this and there are no resolutions to any of it. Sure, the story goes on, but people want some sort of pay off in the book they've already read that makes you want more. This is just a serialized story not a full novel. Our main character is unlikable. She's whiny, completely unaware of herself and everything around her, she's boring and entirely too mutable. She moves too quickly between emotions with little development as to how this works and why. I find it impossible to believe that you can start off desperate to kill vampires and avenge your mother's death and in the span of about a week you don't care about school, you take on a job that makes no sense and is not properly explained and the whole process is badly described, fall in love with a vampire, solve serial murders and become a bit of a slut. And none of this is explained well enough to be believable.Plot development and character relationship development are almost non-existent. It's the whole poor execution of storytelling thing again.I hate the present tense telling of stories. You must be really talented to make it sound intelligent and not procedural or even remotely interesting. This misses the mark. The romance of it makes no sense in that I don't see romance. Lust perhaps, but not actual romance and there are parts that are just eye roll worthy. All in all I just don't buy it. And if I do buy it, I just pity this kind of romance and I wouldn't want it nor want anyone else to have it much less read about it. The love scenes did nothing for me. They weren't sexy and I didn't feel heat in the way they were written. In fact they raised the ick factor and at certain points made me want to put the book down because they actually made me feel as though one party was basically getting used even if they didn't realize it. That isn't sexy, it's just sad.I really wanted to like this book. I wanted to be drawn into the story, but in the end? I was completely turned off- in every way.

What do You think about Dominion (2000)?

I'm really not fond of books written in the first person but the story could be good.
