Donut Days (2009) - Plot & Excerpts

I must admit, I was pretty amazed that the author's first novel took on a free-thinking teen in a conservative, fundamentalist Christian church. But she did it in such an honest way ("Why won't the sky open up and God's voice speak to me, too?") that it felt real and accessible. And then, y'know, Emma spends time at the local gathering of people waiting for the new donut place to open and meets a born-again motorcycle gang who provide perspective from the most unlikely of sources. In the end it is about friendships, and openness, and second chances. And that was pretty cool. Interesting but not great.... well compared to most YA fiction. It is better then most Christian fiction but that is kinda like being the shortest tall person. There was nothing standout here but as someone for whom Christian fiction is alien and odd, I know I'm not really the audience. The cast of supporting characters and church drama really drives the story and the setting was unique. However the ending is fairly predictable.

What do You think about Donut Days (2009)?

It was okay and would have gotten 3 stars if the ending was better.
