Double Jeu (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

This is a story about a 17year old girl called Kit Corrigan. She flee’s home with dreams of making it big on Broadway in NYC. Life gets pretty tough for her in New York and she reluctantly accepts her ex-boyfriend’s father, Nate Benedict’s, help. He sets her up with an apartment, free of charge, a job as a dancer at the Lido, and a whole new wardrobe. Sounds great, doesn’t it? However, Kit is to learn, that everything comes with a price. Nate is a lawyer and is mixed in with the mob. He asks Kit for favours like minding a parcel and to spy on the customers at the Lido. Kit begins to realise that she is in over her head and her life starts to take dangerous turn.I liked this book. It’s very intriguing. Full of mysteries, murder, deceit, glamour. Blundell described life in the 1950’s brilliantly. If we had a time machine, I would love to go there after reading this. This book describes sixteen year-old Kit's experience in New York City during the 1950's. She meets her ex-boyfriend's father, Nate Benedict, a lawyer who's involved in the Mob. As Kit struggles to provide for herself, doing cheap Broadway shows, Nate offers her an apartment and a good paying job. She takes both, in return that she keeps tabs on her ex-boyfriend, Billy, and returns an occasional random favor for Nate. Kit ends up learning and experiencing more than she expected, about her past, her family, and things that she never anticipated when she left Providence, Rhode Island. Something I learned about the world by reading this book is that not everyone can be trusted, which seems important because bad things can happen. If you trust someone that you're suspicious of, your life could change dramatically, like what happened when Kit trusted Nate.I would strongly recommend this book, because it has a very exciting plot, with many twists and turns. Any fan of historical fiction about females, would really enjoy this book. Kit's experiences are quite relatable for teens who are desperate to get jobs. This book includes many actual events, such as the Long Island train wreck in 1950, and the Vietnam War. I personally enjoyed this book a lot, and I have to say, it's very hard to put down.

What do You think about Double Jeu (2013)?

Disappointing. The characters weren't likeable and I didn't care for all the flashbacks.
