Drácula, El No Muerto (2009) - Plot & Excerpts

I wanted to like this book. No, I wanted to LOVE this book. I wanted it to be one of those books that I wind up having ten copies of because I've read them all so much that they fall to pieces.Sadly, it wasn't meant to be. This is supposed to be a sequel to Dracula (a book I've adored since I was a child, and which I've been through several copies). Pretty much from the start you could predict what was going to happen. There were no sudden turns down dark alleys, no surprises jumping out from behind walls. Sex and violence were on display, something that wasn't in the original book. Whether that was deliberate on the parts of the authors in order to make it seem more relevant I don't know. The written style switched between the modern and 19th Century. I've written in a 19th Century style and I know how difficult it can be to hold it for any length of time, especially when the world around you has abandoned some of the language in favour of "LOL" and "txt me bck".This could have been an amazing book. In fact, there are parts of it that are incredible and really give it potential. Sadly, the idea that Dracula was in fact the misunderstood good guy and that it was all Bathory's fault isn't an easy concept to stomach. And the "cameo" by Bram Stoker will probably have him turning in his grave. If you're a fan of the original book, I'd steer clear of this. As others have said, it's been done far better in Kim Newman's "Anno Dracula". I'll put it to one side and maybe give it another go later in the year. I went in to reading this book with high hopes. I LOVED the original Dracula. Read it a number of times so I was excited to find the book written by an ancestor of Bram Stoker.I thoroughly enjoyed it. Lots of creepy stuff going on and it was a lot of fun to find out how the lives of the original character's turned out.I would have liked more Dracula, but otherwise I had a lot of fun with it.

Don't waste your time or money on this book just as I'm not going to waste my time writing a review.
