Drei Beste Freunde, Viola, Ein Ochsenfrosch Und Der Aufregendste Sommer Aller Zeiten (2013) - Plot & Excerpts
This book was different than I expected. Based on its very imaginative cover, I was expecting something with fantastical elements, like magical realism. However, this book is very much realistic fiction and a nice example of the genre. The narrator's voice rings very true for a 9 or 10 year-old boy. Although some of the action moves slowly in the novel, the overall storytelling was so good that I stayed interested throughout. I would definitely recommend this book to most students. It would be great for boys, but girls would enjoy it too. Barbara O'Conner is a master of the cliff hanger chapter. We could not read just one. Each chapter left the kids begging for "one more please?!" You just don't find a wholesome story with good command of language anymore. No, its not mainstream and frankly that is what I liked about it. I would recommend this book to anyone, which means I feel no need to filter for graphic language, violence, magic, biblical concerns or age of listener. We need more writers who respect childhood.
