Drink Of Me (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

I LOVED IT!!!There aren't very many books that can draw that kind of enthusiasm out of me. The book starts right off and the pace is wonderful. The plot moves along almost effortlessly, while characters draw you in. Jacquelyn Frank has created an entirely new mysteriously supernatural world in Drink of Me with a great twist on vampires, demons, and...others. Reule is Prime of his people. Having been forced off their land when he was young, he led his people through the wilderness to a new place where they have built their home/town, and have earned themselves a dark reputation. Reule's people are empaths/vampires (they do take blood) and he is one of the most sensitive and most powerful. It is his abilities that lead him to Mystique.Mystique has no memory of who she is, what she is, where she came from, and has no idea why she is not terrified of the large, alpha male named Reule. She is in terrible shape when he finds her, she is malnourished, beaten, and bloody. But Reule is determined to help her heal and in the process, he allows her to heal him - emotionally. The couple was wonderful! Their feelings for each other seemed natural and their relationship developed smoothly. I loved how he never doubted her or her intentions, even when his people were a distrusting of her and he stuck by her side when her enemies came knocking at his door.I've read Frank's Nightwalker series and I think this book outshines all of her previous work. I started reading this book with an open mind. Based on other reviews I was wary that it might be a little cheesy for my tastes. I was quite surprised that I actually got into it pretty quickly and read for several hours straight. I thought the way the blood taking factor was done was actually refreshing and a welcome change from the typical vampire novels I had currently been reading. I found the book to be nicely engaging up through the middle and I liked the build-up to the blood taking being about more than just a vampire-like need. However, when it finally got to that point, after all the build up I thought the actuality of it was kind of a let-down. It was explained to Mystique early on all the different times that it was actually done. As it turns out the only one of those times the reader gets to see is during one of the many sex-scenes in the book and even as sex scenes go it still just wasn't all that meaningful..If you know what I mean. It was almost just like an afterthought. Still I wasn't completely ready to write the book off as a lost cause until we got toward the end. The ending felt rushed and the dialogue between the characters became sort of flat and generic. I thought maybe with the next book there would be more development and depth to the characters which seemed likely to be forthcoming as the book progressed, but at this time there are no more books of this series in the works. The whole thing felt like a very engaging beginning or an introduction to what could be a series and then suddenly a quick and rushed ending.

What do You think about Drink Of Me (2010)?

Pretty original for a paranormal romance - more about psychic abilities than vampirism.
