Loved "Gallatin Canyon" as that was my first exposure to McGuane. "Driving on the Rim" gave me more of what I'd previously gotten from this author, but it also gave me the sense that even the best writers will tend to ramble at times, and that is fine as far as it goes. But when it meanders with no point and takes the reader to places understood only in the writer's mind, then perhaps that trip should have remained on the cutting board. This is a good read if you don't mind detours. Working out a life. All the puzzles and misconceptions. Struggling to get a grip on what one really wants from life. I.B. (Irving Berlin) Pickett works through a lot in this book with a "holy roller" mother who spends time in several mental institutions and a Dr. who gives him a purpose; taking him hunting & fishing and helping him to go through college and med school. After many follies, loss of friends, he ends up accepting he's more or less contented.
I always liked this author's work, but this book was really awful.
