Dug Down Deep: Unearthing What I Believe And Why It Matters (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

“Dug Down Deep” is not your typical doctrinal or theological study book. You most likely will not find it in a pastoral theology class. Yet, the book offers a profoundly simplistic view at doctrine. Without getting tied up in weighty words and denominational divides, Joshua Harris writes about his own journey in Christianity while teaching the reader the doctrinal truths. By producing a relational approach to doctrine instead of a conceptual approach, the reader grasps a firmer understanding of concepts and story.“Dug Down Deep” won’t hold a match to other apologetic and theological books; but, that is not really what it’s intended to do. Instead, the reader is invited into the story of Joshua Harris to grasp a basic understanding of doctrinal terms such as holiness, redemption, consecration, sanctification, and more. I really appreciated that in the midst of storytelling, there are numerous biblical quotations and examples to illustrate Harris’ point. One of my favorite points in the book was the comparison of King Josiah and King Jehoiakim (2 Kings 22-23 and Jeremiah 36) on their treatment of the Word of God. I found the value of the book was in that insight alone.Overall, while “Dug Down Deep” offers a preliminary and comparatively basic doctrinal explanation, it is a book for everybody. It is a book for the new believer who may be having difficulty understanding “Christian-ese” and other terms in the church and how they apply to you. But, it is also for the Christian of many years to provide a fresh insight into God’s truth and for the chance to look at your own personal story. I highly recommend this book. Please note that Waterbrook Multnomah gave me a free copy of this book for my honest opinion. I was in no way pressured to give a positive review of the above material. Reveling in theology in my own simple way." Having read it, I can say that it is also a popular defense of the importance of theology and, at the same time, an introduction to it. I enjoyed reading it. And my mind immediately began to go to how I could use this book. Josh has given me a new tool! It is interesting, well written, and excellently illustrated. Josh has succeeded again in giving us a book that is clear, engaging, direct, solid, easy to read, sound, God centered, balanced, humorous-and it even has pictures!"
