Eat The Cookie...Buy The Shoes: Giving Yourself Permission To Lighten Up (2010) - Plot & Excerpts
This was the first book by Joyce Meyer I have read. Her writing style is very easy to read and also entertaining. She made some great points in the book that I will keep in mind as I go forward with my walk with Christ. I haven't taken a highlighter to a book in a while, but I found myself having to read with one nearby or in hand as I went through this book. It's a very encouraging book and well worth the read. One of my favorite quotes from the book is "We don't need to be sad, depressed, and discouraged about our past, not even the past of one moment ago! God does not want us to live life always looking in the rearview mirror. We need not forfeit any joy or enjoyment." In other words, once we are forgiven, stop looking back - you need to forgive yourself as well. All in all, a great book which will probably lead me to read more from her. This book is written for a fairly specific demographic, and if you aren't Christian then you're going to get the distinct impression that the book isn't talking to you. I think that's a shame, because the overall premise of this book--balancing self-discipline with self-rewards--is one that applies to a lot of people, maybe almost everyone. There are some things that the author and I firmly agree on. First, that saying birthdays aren't worth celebrating after a certain age is SUPER LAME. Second, if there's an excuse to throw a party, you should throw a party. Other things...didn't sit so well with me (evil humanists are erasing our country's godly Christian past from our children's history books? GAH). Overall, though, I just found it kind of trite. I can see how the book would be a fun read-along for a women's Bible study group or something, but using logic like "God had his temple decorated, He likes pretty things" and "Jesus turned water into wine, He likes parties" isn't exactly...profound. Even to the target demographic, I would imagine. Won this through First Reads!
