El Carnaval De Los Animales (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

Adorable and clever in it's way. I really enjoyed some of the illustrations and the creative way the animals dressed up as something else to attend the party. This will be a great little book for introducing dressing up in costumes, or for use at Halloween. The list of animals dressing up does tend to go on and on for just a bit too long. I don't think this would work so well as a read aloud, but may be a good one on one story. All the animals are invited to a masquerade, and they must choose the right costumes for the occasion. Each illustration that follows a picture of the animal shows it with a costume representing another animal; for instance, the lion decides to go to the party as an elephant, and he puts on a trunk and feet that resemble the elephant's. The elephant, in turn, chooses to go as a parrot with a beak and wings. The book continues in this fashion all the way through to the end. There are a couple of animals that don't don disguises for various reasons, which adds to the fun of the book. However, I found that it went on too long to hold the attention of young readers. The best pages are the last two in the book with the pencil crayon illustration that shows all the animals in their various disguises at the masquerade. There isn't much of a story here, and some of the vocabulary would be challenging for its intended audience. While I like the fact that the illustrator changes things up once in awhile, for instance, having the bat hanging from the top of the page or erasing some of the letters accompanying the ostrich whose head is in the sand, overall, I didn't see much point to this one.

Shortening the parade of animals would make this book even better. Engaging illustrations!

The pictures were very cute. Like how one animal went as another to the party.

One animal disguises as the next, then as the next and so on. Fun.
