El Diario De Las Cajas De Fósforos (2014) - Plot & Excerpts
The Matchbox Diary, is great! I absolutely love the interaction of the grandfather sharing with his granddaughter his memories through his matchbox collection. It was very sweet and heartwarming. The illustrations were beautiful and warm, just like the characters in the book. The illustrations went from color to illustrate the present and to black and white photograph like illustrations when grandpa told his memories. I liked how the illustrations gave visual reference for past and present. When the granddaughter said she wanted a diary at the end of the story, it was really sweet. Fleischman, P. (2013). The matchbox diary. New York: Candlewick. When grandpa gets a visit from his kindergarten granddaughter, he shares his diary with her. This is no ordinary diary. It is an old cigar box filled with matchboxes. Inside each box is a memento of a special memory from his life. Items like a piece of macaroni to remind him of his grandmother and home country of Italy. Each box tells its own story of the grandpa’s life in this beautifully illustrated tale by Newbery Medalist Paul Fleischman. This book could be used as a mentor text for C-CAP writing ‘Slice of Life’ in elementary grades 2-6. Student could use his first person narrative as a guide to pick one matchbox item as a moment in life to write about. *Cultural Diversity - Grandfather is an Italian immigrant. 2014 Christopher Award, A Junior Library Guild Selection, Kirkus Best Children’s Books of 2013
